PICC CLINIC

For administration of chemotherapy drugs, it is always a challenge for the nursing staff or treating doctor to get a fresh venous puncture (IV Line) every time and to maintain IV line during chemotherapy on-flow to avoid extravasation of chemotherapeutic drugs, which may cause local inflammation, cellulitis, and necrosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue.

It further delays the re-administration of chemotherapy till wounds heal. Patients suffer from painful extremities, black staining of the skin over the veins in the hand which has a cosmetically poor outcome.

To overcome these situations, and facilitate better and prolonged, reusable, and easy to maintain IV access throughout the chemotherapy cycles, these specialized catheters are used.

PICC catheter (PERIPHERALLY INSERTED CENTRAL CATHETER) are placed in either of hands through peripheral veins or with the use of Ultra Sonography guidance in mid-arm larger bore veins. These catheters can be used for a year or more if maintained properly.

Other uses of PICC catheters

  • Need for prolonged IV access for infusion of multiple drugs/Iv antibiotic and fluid in ICU settings or need for Iv access for more than 7 days.
  • Conditions like Infective Endocarditis, Osteomyelitis, Tuberculosis, Post Debridement of large wound or infected bones/joints where you need prolonged Iv access for an antibiotic course about 6 to 8 weeks long or even more.
  • Need for Iv access for prolonged nutritional supplementation in a hospital/home basis in conditions where the enteral feeds are compromised due to patient condition or disease status eg. Pancreatitis perioperative management (TPN), Short Gut Syndrome, Nutritional Correction Perioperatively before major surgeries.
  • Total Parenteral Nutrition Or Supportive Nutrition In Palliative Care Patients where Oral Or Enteral Feeds are Compromised Due To Disease Status like In Cases Of Intestinal Obstructions, End-Stage disease.
